ADR standards – Definition and implication
The term ADR refers to the Dangerreuses Route Agreement, i.e. the European agreement relating to the international transport of dangerous goods by road, which is updated every two years with specific amendments. In general, dangerous goods are classified according to the related risk and there are:
- Class 1 Explosive substances and items
- Class 2 Gas
- Class 3 Flammable liquids
- Class 4.1 Flammable solids, self-reactive substances and desensitized solid explosives
- Class 4.2 Substances subject to spontaneous ignition
- Class 4.3 Substances that, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
- Class 5.1 Oxidizing substances
- Class 5.2 Organic peroxides
- Class 6.1 Toxic substances
- Class 6.2 Infectious substances
- Class 7 Radioactive materials
- Class 8 Corrosive substances
- Class 9 Various dangerous substances and objects
Dangerous goods - Definition
In addition to belonging to one of the classes indicated above, dangerous goods are identified by a specific 4-digit identification code or UN number that characterizes each substance. Furthermore, dangerous goods are named based on their chemical characteristics and associated risks.
For example, depending on the case we will have:
- UN N ° 1090 ACETONE
- UN N ° 1104 AMYL ACETATES
- UN N ° 1194 ETHYL NITRITE IN SOLUTION
ADR and dangerous goods table
The dangerous goods table is the heart of ADR and allows you to know the rules relating to each substance with instructions for road transport based on the UN code. The columns contain information on the dangerous substance.
In addition to this, the ADR provides that the transport document contains information on the goods and the associated degree of danger. In this case, the UN number is preceded by the initials UN, the name of the substance and, if applicable, the packing group. For example, you will have:
- UN 1202, DIESEL, 3, III, (D / E)
- UN 1824, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, 8, III, (E)
- UN 1098, ALLYL ALCOHOL, 6.1 (3), I (C / D).
